System Center operations Manager logo http://www.Oostdam.infoSystem Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 is a great product. It has some difficulties, but doesn't have any products have a problem here and there? Now this article has been made here, for several reasons. First of all, I collected all these errors, installs and warnings for my own personal reference. But, it is always better to share knowledge, so I decided to publish these articles, with a little extra explanation on this site, through these articles. So, I hope this article will help you with your problem as well. Now, this article is about a specific event that I run into a lot, so I decided to write a small article on this warning/error. Due to the fact that most visitors of this page are from a lot of different countries, this article is in the english language.

How to resolve a Computer Module verification error with event ID 11551:
After setting up a new environment, or adding a bunch of computers to you Managing Server, a lot of Computer Verification warning could come up. Computer Verification Error - RPC service failed - www.Oostdam.Info picture 01Something like you can see in the example here on the right. These warnings are very often related to firewall settings. The error message you might get is:
Machine Name is 0x800706BA warning "The  RPC server is unavailable".
This is short for: Cannot determine/access the system settings. Now it seems logical to check these service, but what if it is already running?

The event logged in Operations Manager Event log will be something like this:
Date and Time:1-5-2011 15:46Description:
Log Name:Operations ManagerComputer verification failure for Machine Name: machinename.domain.local is 0x800706BA.
The RPC server is unavailable.
Source:Health Service Modules
Event Number:11551
Logging Computer:machinename.domain.local

Please check the following items in order to resolve this issue:

  • Is your windows firewall setup with the correct ports open? Port 5723 is the default for normal communications, and port 5724 is only needed during installation. Check this setting first, or try disable the firewall for a short time. if the firewall is blocking your remote access, the rpc service could not be found ofcourse, and verification will never happen.
  • Make sure that the module is launched with the correct (RunAs) credentials. Wrong credentials can do no verifications.
  • Check if there are incorrect DNS settings. ( MS KB 224370 )
  • Check if the time and time-zone settings of the machine are correct.
  • Check if the "TCP/IP Helper" service is running. ( It should be )
  • Check if the "Remote Registry" service is running. ( It should be )

If the message keeps appearring and bothering you, there is a way around it, which is certainly not a recommendation,
but it might be a solution for you. Try to run the following command from an elevated command-prompt:
Netsh firewall set service remoteadmin enable all
A simple "Ok" will return on your screen and your RPC unavailable errors will be gone forever.

Hope that this article will have helped you a bit further............
Have fun, using System Center Operation Manager R2!
